Teatime with Mr. Sun

by Pookie

I sat alone outside, on my small deck. A table was spread before me. Two teacups were ready and by their side a large finely decorated teapot let out a delicious aroma of leaves being brewed. Across from me sat a plate covered with small pastries, each one looking more delicious than the other. I sighed and idly reached for one of the cookies. I knew I should be waiting for my guest, but he was late and my stomach was complaining. I lay back in my chair and, as my eyes turned towards the gray skies, took a small bite of my chocolate covered cookie. He’ll be here soon, I thought as I closed my eyes. And soon enough, he did arrive. I took notice of his presence as warmth ran down my cheeks, soft and gentle. I smiled and opened my eyes, looking for my guest.

“Sol!” I called out in joy as I saw him.

An aura of radiance shone around him so brightly that sometimes I feared I would loose my sight if I stared at him too long. “Good afternoon.” A soft smile illuminated his face as he took his seat “Forgive me if I was late, I was held back by a Storm up North.”

“Oh yes, I heard about that one. Wasn’t that the same stubborn Storm that plagued us recently?” I asked as I poured the warm tea in his cup.

“No, not exactly.” He thanked me and added some sugar in his cup before sipping it. After complimenting me on my choice of tea he continued his story, “That was her twin. Both share the same stubborn trait as you may have noticed. But the one here was much less courageous than her sister.” He winked and looked up to the sky.

“I see...” I leaned back into my chair after having filled my cup and followed his gaze. I sipped my tea, letting the warm liquid warm me and admired the skies above. Where minutes ago large gray clouds fought to cover the wide expanse of the sky, now only a handful of smaller ones stood alone in the ocean of Azure. The intensity of the blue seemed to grow with every heartbeat and it was not long before the small songbird was heard. Soft feathers fluttered as the courageous bird flew to a nearby branch, warming himself in Sol’s presence.

The rest of the afternoon was spent in amiable chatter, occasionally interrupted by small outbursts of crystal laughter or by stretches of comfortable silence. We were both caught by surprise when Dusk came by my little deck. She greeted us warmly, not hiding her joy at seeing Sol stay this late. I smiled as I watched the two get reacquainted. Those two always had a beautiful relationship, and while they would be happy seeing each other anywhere, they were particularly fond of the sea. My gaze turned to the skies as I watched colors swirl and mix together, creating an intimate painting. A warm breeze brushed by me and I returned my attention to the pair. Sol’s long golden hair lifted and danced behind him in a fluid motion, reminding me just how much I had missed his presence. Dusk was starting to get sleepy, having spent herself too much with Sol around, and after embracing both of us one last time left our company for Night’s embrace.

“Tell me Sol, would you stay for dinner?” I asked shyly, not ready to see him go again.

He looked at me with an air of surprise and then smiled that small warm smile of his. “I would love to.”

“Great!” I clasped my hands together, a broad smile on my face “I must get diner ready then, what would you like to eat Sol?”

He looked at the skies as they started to turn a darker shade of blue. Lunes was waking, his soft white glow slowly intensifying. Night was going to be beautiful by his side, with the promise of many stars decorating her dark coat. “Something warm...” he whispered before turning to me. “Let’s go inside, we'll figure something out.” He offered me his arm and his smile. I laughed and took it happily and together we entered my small house, knowing that tomorrow would be another beautiful day.
